He
started out being born in my first litter, the last born, but not
wriggling like the rest. Panic, what'll I do? I rubbed him vigorously,
then watch, was that a breath, I think it was. Rub, rub and more
rubbing. Yes! he's breathing.
Triumph, this splendid looking specimen was
alive. A closer look it's a boy! And on his nose was the tiniest of
marks, a black dot, just a smidge and that was how he got his name. Not
a grand show name.
He
grew and grew and although being the runt he wasn't that much smaller
than the rest. Of course we'd better tell you about the rest as well.
Glori the only girl became a spoilt horror - Horror Head for short or
Mouth from the South. Chocky who grew into a very handsome and
muscularly creature and Francis who is equally a magnificent boy too.
Smidgey
had something, just that little bit of Spunk. Just ask John and Sharon
the Vets. His first visit John went up to him all full of goos and gaas
and Smidgey fuzzed all up like a bottlebrush. He said "He's not
touching me with that thermometer". This reputation followed him
for the rest of his life but sadly, only those at home new the real
Smidge.
This
soppy, sooky boy that dribbled and purred all over you. The boy that
would roll on his back and look at you with those piercing blue eyes
saying please rub my tummy and don't stop. He would talk to you with a
very low meow not a raucous shriek like most Siamese but a voice that
would say I'm lonely mum how about a hug. He loved to be kissed on the
top of his head stretching his elegant neck to make sure you didn't
stop. Even to the point of very gentle head butts to say please don't
stop.
Smidge
was very good at acting; he
would stand at his boundary, swearing at all who dared to come near his
territory. This ritual huffing and puffing, saying look
how tough I am, see them back off when I come near.
His
cuddles I'll never forget. This huge cat nestled in my arms purring
contentedly with his two paws resting gently around my neck and his head
tucked in close to my face.
As I'm writing this, tears are streaming down
my face. I miss you Smidge.
Such a savage and fierce cat to the vets, he
had them all bluffed, this big sooky cat has gone.
Nigh, nigh Smidge, Mummy loves you
and has ended your pain.
Forever
to live on in my memories.
